SUMMARY:Net Zero Dialogues 4th edition ~ by ATREE
DESCRIPTION:In the fourth edition of the Net Zero Dialogues\, we wish to define parameters to assess social & ecological impacts of renewable energy projects that can feed into policy. To brainstorm this approach\, ATREE\, 14 Trees Foundation\, Ecological Society Pune and Chandrakanta Kesavan Center for Energy Policy and Climate Solutions at IIT Kanpur are convening a one-day workshop at ATREE\, Bangalore on 31st August 2024. The workshop will bring together various stakeholders from the renewable energy space\, consisting of domain experts in ecology\, energy policy\, solar and wind energy industries\, government\, civil society\, other key project implementers and academicians from various institutes. \nContext \nSince the industrial revolution\, anthropogenic activities have led to an unprecedented surge in greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming as well as pollution and depletion of natural resources. These have brought us to the brink of an environmental disaster and existential crises\, requiring us to act with urgency. Thus\, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and restoring ecosystems are the most pressing matters for the current century\, with an eventual goal of net zero emissions (NetZero). \nHowever\, the path to NetZero is not straightforward and requires a nuanced approach involving various stakeholders. While it is a no-brainer that we need to increase our reliance on new\, clean and renewable energy technology solutions\, these must be context and locale-specific and be implemented in harmony with economic\, social and ecological perspectives.  \nAshoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE)\, Ecological Society\, 14 Trees Foundation and IIT Kanpur have together conducted brainstorming sessions to take this discussion forward. A group of climate professionals\, ecologists\, economists\, nature enthusiasts\, and technologists\, including academicians\, entrepreneurs\, freelancers\, have been convening several workshops over the past three years to discuss the road to NetZero. The takeaway from these workshops was an improved understanding of issues related to NetZero and the interdependencies to be considered in developing an actionable approach to NetZero.

SUMMARY:Demystifying Climate Change ~ by Bangalore International Centre
DESCRIPTION:Every day we hear something unusual. A fire here\, a flood there\, a storm surge\, a cloudburst. These events affect all of us\, our well-being\, our health\, our family\, our work. Their frequency and intensity are increasing. Fortunately\, however\, we no longer lack explanations for these events. We know fossil fuels and the destruction of Nature by us humans are the primary reasons for the alarming acceleration in global warming. \nAwareness is the first step towards change\, and Rajan Mehta’s Backstage Climate is an attempt to make you aware of global warming and climate change in a simple and interesting manner. It demystifies this grim reality—the science\, the politics and the economics behind climate change. It also gives you a glimpse of the policies\, technology and solutions that can help save the planet and ensure our survival. \nGoing slightly beyond mere awareness\, the attempt is to help the reader connect the dots and develop a perspective on the reasons\, impact and solutions that can help us avoid a climate crisis. \nRajan Mehta will be in conversation with Prem Panicker. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Trees of Bengaluru:from Far and Near ~ by Science Gallery Bengaluru
DESCRIPTION:Bengaluru’s trees are a collection of both native and exotic species which lend the city its botanical diversity. The trees are part of a network of local and global transactions of human minds that work to nurture the cosmopolitan nature of this global city. These trees are part of our social\, cultural\, and emotional landscape. In this lecture\, art historian Suresh Jayaram will unpack the city’s entanglement with the aesthetic curation of trees and their role in giving the city an identity. SUMMARY:City and the ideas of the Public ~ MAP\, Bengaluru
DESCRIPTION:Join this thought-provoking session with urbanist Dr. Gautam Bhan where he explores the concept of the ‘public’ and how different groups shape and experience a city’s culture and sense of belonging. This talk will investigate the dynamic relationship between public spaces and cultural identity. Dr. Bhan will examine how parks\, streets\, and communal areas serve as sites for unscripted interactions\, both similar in experience and distinct in values. He will explore how these interactions trigger dialogue\, shape a city’s culture. Essential for anyone interested in the interplay between public spaces and the diverse cultures they nurture\, this discussion will provide valuable insights into the broader urban experience. \nDr. Bhan’s discourse will shed light on critical questions such as: Who does the city belong to? Who does it leave out? How do cultural encounters trigger dialogue and shape the collective experience of a city? \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:The What\, How and Why of Lake Restoration ~ Azim Premji University
DESCRIPTION:Enough has been written and described about Bengaluru being the city of lakes and tanks. However\, many of these public spaces continue to be in disrepair despite the tremendous amount of work undertaken towards restoring lakes\, highlighting the need for more sustained efforts in this direction. Numerous initiatives have focussed on protecting Bengaluru’s lakes\, but these initiatives are often confronted with a lack of resources\, limited understanding of management policies\, and inadequate ecological considerations of outcomes. \nAs part of their initiatives on climate change and sustainability\, Azim Premji University is organising a one-day workshop on understanding the processes involved in lake restoration. We aim to provide a platform for communities to come together and learn about the importance of lake restoration\, and understand how to engage in restoration efforts. \nEngage in meaningful discussion and dialogue around lake restoration processes\, and learn from the experiences of communities that have succeeded in similar efforts. The workshop will include citizen groups\, ecologists\, researchers and practitioners experienced in the area of restoration of lakes. \nThe workshop will highlight the role of citizens and communities\, the collaboration of stakeholders including governments\, resident associations\, civil society groups\, and donors\, and will detail the various steps in lake restoration\, through conversations with experts involved in this journey for decades. In addition\, the workshop will underline the need for effective communication and dissemination to garner public support. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Rivers & People: A Disconnect in Times of Scarcity ~ by Paani.Earth
DESCRIPTION:Rivers & People: A Disconnect in Times of Scarcity\nCreating a Space to Think\, Ideate and Protect Rivers\nBengaluru\, India’s economic engine\, is a water-starved city. The Cauvery river\, its lifeline\, is drying up and severely polluted\, while the Western Ghats forests\, where its waters originate\, are rapidly degrading. Yet\, the government continues to push for unsound projects like the Mekedatu Dam and Yettinahole Drinking Water project\, further damaging the rivers and forests that sustain us. Amid this\, the city remains disconnected from its rivers\, yet perpetually thirsty. \nThis session will begin with a discussion followed by songs about rivers sung by children and an English adaptation of Komal Swaminathan’s 1980 satirical Tamil play Thaneer Thaneer. Set in a drought-ridden village in Tamil Nadu\, the play follows a stranger who helps the villagers harness water against political and natural challenges\, showing the power of a community deeply connected to its water sources. \nIt promises to be a valuable experience for anyone who cares about the environment\, our rivers\, and the future we are shaping for generations to come. \nRSVP Here \nPaani.Earth\, a citizen-led think tank\, is dedicated to river conservation. The team will share their efforts to protect the rivers that sustain us. SUMMARY:"Children Need Nature" - a national conference ~ by Karma Bhoomi Trust
DESCRIPTION:The Children need Nature conference is being offered to all by Prakriya Green Wisdom School and Bhoomi College with Karma Bhoomi Trust as the organiser. \nAbout the Conference: Many thought leaders and educationists would agree that all of us\, children as well as adults will benefit from connecting to Nature\, living a lifestyle that values Nature more. In addition\, today there is increasing scientific research as well\, that makes it clear that children need Nature for multiple reasons\, not only for their physical and mental health\, but also to improve their cognitive and creative abilities as well as their socio-emotional and personal growth. It is also becoming increasingly clear that it is essential to foster future generations who have a greater connect with Nature and a greater willingness to engage in climate action and practices for sustainability. What the world needs more than ever before are custodians and stewards of nature! It has become an imperative in times of acute climate crisis and nature disconnect. \nThe purpose of this conference is to create a space for parents\, educators and school administrators to share research findings and nature education practices and join a movement to include Nature education sessions in schools to care for the future of our children and the future of our planet. The organisers welcome you to be part of the conference! \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Urban Ecology - a New Lens on Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to invite you to the Urban Ecology exhibition\, a collaboration with the IIHS Library and Mihir Kulkarni from the IIHS School of Environment and Sustainability.\nUnderstanding urban ecological dynamics is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate biodiversity loss and promote nature conservation within cities and for improved sustainability. However\, the process of urbanisation intertwines with social and economic factors\, creating complex interactions that demand our attention. Urban ecology addresses these challenges by studying ecology in\, of\, and for the city. Through a series of engaging activities focussed on India\, this quarter’s exhibition is curated to introduce a broader audience to this fascinating area of research. \nThe curated collection of books\, publications and research articles delves into the complex interactions between cities\, nature\, and the social factors that influence them. \nThe exhibition is free and open to all; walk in and enjoy the curation. Don’t miss the dedicated corner showcasing publications from our Small Grants Programme Projects!
