Climate Charche Open Series
The objective of the Climate Charche Open Series is to enable different audience groups with a range of tools, vocabulary, capacities and resources on climate adaptation and resilience.
These include capacity-building workshops on Geo spatial decoding, Systems Thinking Modelling, Life Cycle Assessment, and more; In addition, film screenings, webinars and other engagements have also been facilitated on various aspects of Climate change and sustainability.

WORKSHOP : Decoding urban climate with geospatial techniques
Bengaluru Sustainability Forum (BSF) in collaboration with the Centre for Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) curated a workshop on “Decoding urban climate using geospatial techniques’. This day-long workshop took participants through the importance of geospatial data, its use cases and relevance, and a detailed hands-on training session on how to use various Google Earth Engine data sets for urban climate issues.
WORKSHOP: Modelling for Climate and Sustainability : A Systems Thinking Approach
This workshop introduced the concept of Systems thinking and showcased how it can be used to model Climate & Sustainability related issues in the context of Bengaluru.
It enabled an understanding of the complexity of climate & sustainability issues and the need to acknowledge the interdependence across different sectors as well as the criticality of data availability.
WORKSHOP: Navigating Sustainability with Life Cycle Assessment
This workshop was planned for mid- career researchers studying, working or interested in the fields of sustainability, circular economy and sustainable development. It aimed to help participants build a strong foundation of LCA, enabling them to: identify and quantify the environmental hotspots of a product or service;
evaluate the potential environmental impacts of
these hotspots; assess alternative options available to reduce these impacts through data-based decision and targeted interventions.
Over the course of the day, the participants were guided through the definitions, ISO framework, related concepts and models of LCA as well as its application through scenario based activities and group exercises.
FILM SCREENING: Seed Stories – The Question of Sustainability
BSF, in collaboration with NCBS, organised the screening of this award winning film on agrarian change and the coming of HT/Bt cotton in the Niyamgiri range of Odisha. The screening was followed by a panel discussion on how to achieve both sustainability and food and nutrition security . Moderated by Prof. LS Shashidhara, Director NCBS, the panel explored what sustainability is in the context of agriculture, including aspects like biodiversity and soil health. It also delved into the kinds of solutions modern science may provide, what the Government could do to enable farmers to adopt sustainable agriculture practices and also bring in aspects of economics, politics and international diplomacy of food security.
WEBINAR: Heat in Cities : Addressing increasing heat stress in urban India
This webinar co-organised by BSF & the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) brought together experts, campaigners, and stakeholders to discuss heat-stress, and its significant impact on public health, vulnerable citizens, and urban systems.
It focused on the specific challenges urban India faces, and the discussion highlighted strategies, responses, and action plans to mitigate heat-related risks by discussing the steps that can be taken to safeguard communities most impacted by heat stress.
WEBINAR: “What’s in Your City’s Air?” : Understanding Air Quality for community based solutions
This webinar aimed to equip participants with foundational knowledge about air pollution and actionable insights for tackling this growing issue. Some of the aspects covered were
- Understanding of air pollution; why it is a growing concern, and what are the ways to prevent it. What are criteria pollutants like PM2.5, PM10, Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Ground level ozone, Nitrogen oxide and lead
- Impacts on human health.
- Understanding of the Air Quality Index (AQI), how it is computed and what it tells us
- Discussion on sources of anthropogenic air pollution in cities, classification of pollutants as primary and secondary; city-specific sources of emissions and their relative contribution.
- Government initiatives on managing air quality management: National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and what Bangalore’s clean air action plan says.
