Sahajeevana addresses human–wildlife interactions through community-designed dialogues, tech-enabled tools and place-based action with residents, farmers, youth and local stakeholders across Bengaluru’s peri-urban forest edges.
Bengaluru’s southern edge is where the city meets forest. Sudden Encounters are rising driven by extreme heat, erratic rainfall and habitat fragmentation and land hardest on daily-wage workers, small farmers and informal-settlement residents. Karnataka recorded over 35,500 human–wildlife interactions in 2024–25, roughly 97 a day. At the edges, the response remains reactive: rescue squads, media panic, demands for barriers.
Sahajeevana builds different layer through three pillars People, Data, Action. P.E.A.C.E. dialogues in all three corridors surface what residents know about aane and chirate, feeding a Five-Layer Coexistence Dashboard that layers open satellite, vegetation, water, biodiversity and sighting data with community memory. Against criteria published at inception, one corridor is selected for a single, deeply built and monitored pilot an alert network, bio-fencing, water points or signage. The work runs in the local language throughout, through place-based actions rooted in each corridor.
The project leaves behind three community-owned encounter maps, a live dashboard, one working pilot, trained coexistence champions in every corridor, a bilingual field guide and short documentary, a policy brief to the Greater Bangalore Authority and Karnataka Forest Department, and an open-access methodology other cities can reuse.
