This project aims to transform Bengaluru’s urban green spaces by promoting sustainable gardening practices centered around native plant species. Through public outreach, policy advocacy, and educational tools, we seek to foster a deeper connection between the city’s residents and its unique biogeographic heritage.

This project is part of a larger initiative dedicated to transforming Bengaluru’s urban gardens by championing the use of native plant species that are best suited to the city’s biogeographic context. Developed by PLUS and ATREE, the ‘Urban Gardens Bengaluru’ initiative includes a comprehensive book that not only educates readers on the region’s flora but also provides practical guidance through plant cards and detailed planting combinations.

To drive real on-ground change however, the project extends beyond the book, actively engaging landscape practitioners, urban planners, developers, and the public through the ‘Greens on Wheels’ outreach programme. Key objectives of this programme include raising public awareness about the benefits of native plants, influencing urban policies to incorporate sustainable gardening practices, and creating accessible tools for garden design.

Central to the outreach strategy is a mobile nursery that will travel across the city, offering a curated selection of native plants alongside informative resources. This mobile unit will visit residential areas, public parks, and community events, providing workshops, demonstrations, and personalized guidance to inspire and empower residents to redesign their urban gardens with sustainable, biodiversity-rich planting schemes.Through these efforts, the project aims to foster a greener, more sustainable Bengaluru.
